Hi,
We're hoping to have our first meetup for DIY New York City in the next couple of weeks.
If anyone has a meeting space to volunteer, get in touch.
Also, feel free to propose topics to focus on in the first meeting. We have some idea of the direction we think things should take, given who it seems will be in attendance, but anyone who wants to propose ideas of their own should do so.
More soon.

John,
The work of The Open Planning Project parallels DIY to some extent. They recently took an early step (see metacollaboration) to work with the Open Society Institute on a related matter. Which leads me to think they might look favorably on DIY and allow use of their space on West 12th for the meeting.
Perhaps Nick Grossman is the one to talk to, or he can direct you.
I look forward to the meeting.
Best,
Tom Lowenhaupt
P.S. I'd like to suggest a topic: That the group consider that the imminent availability of city-TLDs provides a unique opportunity to signify the start of a new era. That an assortment of civic applications - perhaps centered on a city map - might be jointly developed and presented to the public in 2010 in conjunction with the introduction of the .nyc TLD. Perhaps with its introduction presented as parallel in scope to the switch from analog to digital TV next February 17th. Having made the suggestion of maps as a common coordinator, I'm sending a copy of this email to Werner Staub in Geneva. Werner works with CORE which is developing a GIS feature that might be used by the various dotCities.

By John GeraciTom thanks for the suggestion - I'll talk to Nick and Open Planning Project about a possible space for a first meetup.
Love the idea of a dotCity TLD too. Interested in hearing more.
